NEW/OLD KID ON THE BLOCK
I’ve spent twenty years as a journalist — not a bad one, if you believe the rumors —deciphering the Caucasus and the rest of what we so affectionately call the post-Soviet space – the universe that seems perpetually stuck in the ‘post’ and never quite arriving at the destination. Then, fate and a handful of oligarchs conspired against journalism in many ways and many places. In my home country, Georgia, the air for critical voices became too thin to breathe. With the newsroom I called home gone, I’m moving my desk to Substack. I hope you’ll follow me into this digital exile; the stories haven’t stopped, they’ve just changed addresses.
